Athena Asks: In Search of Juan de Pareja

In this two-part episode of Athena Asks, our guest host Dr Madeleine Haddon discusses the Met's exhibition on the Afro-Hispanic painter Juan de Pareja (c.1608–1670) with its curators, Dr David Pullins and Dr Vanessa K. Valdés. The exhibition features a number of works by Pareja, who has until now been known largely as Diego Velázquez's enslaved assistant. In the second half, the speakers go on to discuss a parallel display, co-curated by Dr Haddon and Dr Guillaume Kientz, at New Yorks' Hispanic Society Museum. The exhibition highlights the role that Harlem Renaissance collector and scholar Arturo Schomburg played in recovering Pareja's biography.
