In 1876, the Prussian king ceremonially opened the "National Gallery" on Museum Island. Contrary to the inscription "To German Art" on the pediment, the collection was international from the outset and developed into one of the most important German collections of French avant-garde art. In its new "InterNationalgalerie" series, the Alte Nationalgalerie will invite national galleries and museums from around the world over the next few years to present themselves with an exhibition window within the building, introducing themselves to international and Berlin audiences by addressing particularly topical themes and issues. The National Museum in Warsaw will launch the series with an exhibition entitled The Invention of Myths.
